The trolley handles the island. We handle everything else.
Manatee County runs a free trolley the length of Gulf Drive, which covers most of what a guest wants day to day — the beaches, Bridge Street, the shops and restaurants at each end of the island. A hire car spends that week parked.
What the trolley does not do is the airport, dinner on the mainland, or a day in Sarasota. Those are the trips worth booking, and for a week-long stay they usually come to less than seven days of rental plus the island's genuinely limited parking.
It runs the length of Gulf Drive and it is free. For beach days and dinner on the island it is the right answer, which is exactly why a rental car is usually the wrong one.
