Directly on the Gulf at Bradenton Beach, the island's southern town — closer to the Cortez and Longboat Pass bridges than anywhere else on Anna Maria, which cuts both ways.
Bradenton Beach is the busiest part of a quiet island.
Bradenton Beach holds Bridge Street — the island's concentration of bars, restaurants and the historic pier — and sits between the Cortez bridge to the mainland and Longboat Pass at the southern tip. It is the part of Anna Maria with the most going on and the most traffic to go with it.
The practical upside is that it is the quickest end of the island to leave from. The downside is that Gulf Drive through Bradenton Beach backs up on a Saturday, and both nearby bridges open. We plan departures against that rather than against the distance.

Bridge Street is walkable. Cortez is not.
Most of what guests want in the evening is within walking distance, which is one of the reasons to stay at this end. The exception is Cortez across the bridge — the working fishing village with the best seafood in the area and nowhere to park.
That is the trip worth booking with a return leg attached. A short run over the bridge and back, and nobody drives a drawbridge road after dinner.
The long, quieter stretch at the southern tip of the island, past Bridge Street and before the Longboat Pass bridge. A short run, and easier arrived at than parked at in season.
