The Avalon dates from St. Petersburg's 1920s boom, when the city built a row of small hotels for winter visitors arriving by train. Most are gone; this one was restored and is still doing the job it was built for, a few blocks from Central Avenue and a walk from the waterfront.
It has the footprint of its era, which means no sweeping porte-cochère and no valet queue. Pickups are kerbside and quick if the car is already there, which is why we stage ahead of the booking rather than dispatching at the appointed minute.
