02 / Getting Off the Island for a Flight
The last morning is the one that goes wrong.
A big resort checking out on a Sunday morning puts a lot of people on Gulf Boulevard and the Pinellas Bayway simultaneously, and that is on top of whatever the weekend beach traffic is doing. It is the single most common way a beach holiday ends in a sprint through the terminal.
We schedule departures earlier than the drive time alone suggests, stage the cars at the resort before the pickup slot, and run them in a sequence rather than all at once. Boring, and it works.
PIE is roughly 25–30 minutes and TPA roughly 40–50 in normal conditions. On a check-out Sunday in season, neither figure holds. The margin is the point.
