A Pre-Cruise Day in Tampa
Almost every Tampa cruise is a turnaround, and almost every experienced cruiser flies in the day before. This is what to do with that day, with the luggage problem solved.

Cruisers sailing from Port Tampa Bay who have taken the sensible advice and flown in a day early. It works for couples, for families, and particularly for groups travelling with a week of luggage who do not want to spend the extra day tied to a hotel room.
Recommended duration: Arrival afternoon plus a morning transfer — typically a 4-hour block on day one and a terminal transfer on day two
Where we start.
Tampa International Airport (TPA)
Baggage Claim, Level 1, Main Terminal. Every bag goes straight into the vehicle and stays there until your hotel — no shuttle, no second handling.
St. Pete–Clearwater International (PIE)
The smaller Pinellas alternative many cruisers fly into. Curbside pickup, same door-to-door handling.

If you arrived earlier in the day under your own steam, we start from the hotel instead.
The stops, in order.
Times below are how long to give each stop — a planning recommendation, not an opening hour. Check hours, tickets and admission on each venue’s own site before you go.
Hotel check-in
Downtown, Water Street or Channelside / About 30 minutes
First stop, always. Staying near the channel means the next morning’s terminal run is short and the evening is walkable. Drop the bags, keep the day clothes, and come back down.
Water Street & Sparkman Wharf
Downtown Tampa, on the channel / About 90 minutes
The district your ship will be berthed a few minutes from. Waterfront walking, an easy lunch or coffee, and a first look at the channel the ship comes down.
Ybor City
East of downtown / About 90 minutes
The most distinctive thing in Tampa and the one most cruisers miss entirely. Brick streets, the cigar history, and a completely different register from the new downtown. Give it the afternoon rather than an hour.
Dinner near the water
Downtown Tampa or Channelside / The evening
End close to the hotel so nobody is driving or waiting for a car at the end of a travel day. The Insider Guide’s waterfront and steakhouse picks are the shortlist we would give a friend.
Port Tampa Bay terminal
Channelside Drive — Terminal 2, 3 or 6 / Next morning, timed to your boarding window
The second leg. Your terminal is on your cruise documents; assignments rotate by ship and sailing date, so we confirm it with you rather than guessing. We drop at the porter area with the luggage out of the vehicle and onto the cart.
What to know about the driving.
- Book the two legs as one reservation. Day one is an hourly block; day two is a straight terminal transfer, timed to your boarding window rather than to the ship’s sailing time.
- Your cruise documents name your terminal — 2, 3 or 6 on Channelside Drive. Terminal assignments rotate by ship and sailing date, so we take it from your documents and not from last season’s pattern.
- A week of cruise luggage is the reason to take the SUV rather than the sedan, even for two people. Cruise bags are larger than the bags the same couple would take to a conference.
- If you are sailing from Port Canaveral rather than Tampa — Disney and the tallest mega-ships cannot pass under the Sunshine Skyway — the day-one itinerary is unchanged and day two becomes a long-haul transfer east.
