A family day in an unfamiliar city usually fails on logistics rather than on the attractions. This itinerary is built around the logistics.

Families with children of any age visiting Tampa, and local families marking an occasion. Particularly useful with under-fives, where a buggy, a nap and a car park on the far side of a theme park do not combine well.

Times below are how long to give each stop — a planning recommendation, not an opening hour. Check hours, tickets and admission on each venue’s own site before you go.
The Florida Aquarium
Channelside, Downtown Tampa / Two to three hours
The best first stop of the day: indoors, air-conditioned, genuinely good, and right on the channel. Morning is calmer than afternoon. Check the day’s hours and buy tickets in advance on the aquarium’s own site.
Lunch and the Riverwalk
Downtown Tampa / About 90 minutes
Walk a stretch of the Riverwalk and eat somewhere along it. With small children this is also the natural nap window — the vehicle is the quiet, cool place to take it, and the chauffeur can idle in air conditioning rather than you looking for somewhere to sit.
ZooTampa, Busch Gardens or Adventure Island
North Tampa / The afternoon
Pick one — trying to do two is the classic mistake. ZooTampa is the gentler option and works for a half day; Busch Gardens and Adventure Island are full-day parks and better as the whole afternoon. Hours, ticketing and seasonal closures are on each park’s own site.
Dinner, somewhere nobody has to behave
Downtown or Channelside / The evening

What to know about the driving.
- Tell us the children’s ages when you book. Child seats are arranged in advance; they are not something to sort out at the kerb at eight in the morning.
- A GMC Yukon SUV is the right vehicle for a family day — room for a buggy, a cooler bag and everything a theme park afternoon generates, with the seats still usable.
- One major attraction per day. ZooTampa as a half day is realistic; ZooTampa plus Busch Gardens is not, and the day falls apart in the middle.
- Theme park and aquarium hours, ticket prices and seasonal closures change — check each attraction’s own site the week you go. We deliberately publish none of them.
- The vehicle is the reset button: air conditioning, a nap, a change of clothes, somewhere to put the soaked shoes from the splash ride.
