A Clearwater Beach Day, Driven
Clearwater Beach is thirty-odd miles and one causeway from Tampa. The distance is not the problem. Parking on a Saturday in March is the problem.

Visitors staying in Tampa who want a proper Gulf beach day without renting a car for it, families who do not want to carry beach kit across a car park, and anyone visiting between January and April when the beach parking situation is at its worst.

Downtown, Water Street, Westshore or South Tampa. Morning pickup; the earlier the better in high season.
Tampa International Airport (TPA)
Works as an arrival-day itinerary — bags stay in the vehicle and you check in at a beach hotel at the end of it.

Door-to-door from anywhere in Hillsborough or Pinellas County.

Times below are how long to give each stop — a planning recommendation, not an opening hour. Check hours, tickets and admission on each venue’s own site before you go.
Clearwater Beach
Pinellas County, on the Gulf / Three to four hours
The main event: wide, white, shallow-shelving Gulf sand. Get there in the morning — the beach is at its best early and the causeway is at its worst late. Your chauffeur drops you at the beach access rather than wherever a space happened to be.
Lunch on the water
Mandalay Avenue and the beachfront / About 90 minutes
Beachside cafés and Gulf-front rooms are a short walk from the sand. The Insider Guide’s Clearwater picks are the ones we would send family to.
Pier 60 and the afternoon
Clearwater Beach / An hour or more
The pier, the shops along Mandalay, and — if you have stayed late enough — the sunset, which is the reason people keep coming back to this stretch of coast. Check the day’s sunset time before you plan around it.
Back to Tampa
Door-to-door / When you are ready
The return crosses the causeway and the bay. Late afternoon is the heaviest direction of travel on a weekend; we would rather leave a little early or a little late than sit in the middle of it with sunburn.
What to know about the driving.
- Eight hours is the honest booking for a beach day. Six works if you treat it as a half day and accept a shorter stretch on the sand.
- Beach parking in Pinellas is the single biggest friction on this trip, and it is worst from January through April. Being dropped and collected removes it entirely.
- Bring the beach kit; it lives in the vehicle. Towels, chairs, a cooler and wet things at the end of the day all go back in the boot rather than into a hotel lobby.
- If you want a Gulf beach with less around it, say so when you book — St. Pete Beach and Pass-a-Grille are the quieter alternatives on the same run.
- This also works one-way as a transfer if you are checking into a Clearwater Beach hotel rather than returning to Tampa.
