Clearwater Beach is a barrier island on the Gulf, reached from Tampa by causeway. It is the most-booked leisure transfer we run out of TPA, and the one where the parking situation at the far end does most of the arguing for us.

TPA sits on the western edge of Tampa, which makes it the closest major airport to the Pinellas beaches. The run west crosses Tampa Bay on the Courtney Campbell Causeway — open water on both sides for most of it — then continues across the Pinellas peninsula to the intracoastal, and finally over the Clearwater Memorial Causeway onto the barrier island itself. Clearwater Beach is a single island road with the Gulf on one side, Mandalay Avenue as its spine, and hotels strung along both. That last island crossing is the part that gets congested, and it is the reason arrival timing matters more on this route than on any other from TPA.

Beach parking is the problem this route exists to solve
Clearwater Beach is a barrier island with finite parking, and from January through April it fills early and stays full. Arriving in a vehicle you then have to store is the worst version of a beach holiday. Being delivered to the hotel entrance and collected from it removes the entire category of problem for the length of your stay.
Beach luggage is not conference luggage
Families arriving for a week on the Gulf come with large cases, beach kit and often a buggy. This is the transfer where a booked SUV with a chauffeur who loads it matters most, and the one where a rideshare arriving with the wrong size of boot is most likely to ruin the first hour.
It is far enough that the fare should be fixed

Baggage Claim, Level 1 of the Main Terminal
TPA is one Main Terminal connected to four satellite airsides by shuttle. You ride your airside’s shuttle back, come down to Baggage Claim on Level 1, and your chauffeur is there with a sign showing your name.
Red side or Blue side, decided by your airline
Baggage claim at TPA is split Red and Blue by carrier, with ground transportation tied to the same split. Your confirmation tells your chauffeur which side to meet you on, so there is no phone call and no walking the length of the hall.
They park and walk in — no kerbside circling
Curbside space at TPA is for active loading only. Your chauffeur parks and comes inside rather than looping the terminal or sitting in the cell phone lot waiting for a call.

Complimentary wait time is measured from actual landing rather than from your scheduled time. International arrivals clear U.S. Customs at Airside F, which is the least predictable part of any arrival, so those get 90 minutes.
Your luggage goes straight into the vehicle
The chauffeur handles the bags from the carousel to the boot. There is no shuttle bay, no second handling, and no walk to a rental car centre — which at TPA is a separate building reached by its own train.

A week of beach luggage for a family of four does not go in a sedan, and the last thing anyone wants after a flight is a conversation about boot space in the TPA kerbside lane. The beach itself
Wide, white, shallow-shelving Gulf sand — the reason the island is busy and the reason people come back. The public beach access points run along the western side of the island, with Pier 60 roughly at its centre.
Mandalay Avenue and the island
The island’s main street, running behind the beachfront: cafés, shops, and the beachside restaurants the Insider Guide points at. Almost everything on Clearwater Beach is walkable from a beachfront hotel, which is exactly why not needing a car here works so well.
What is nearby, and what is not
Clearwater Beach is at the northern end of the Pinellas barrier islands. St. Pete Beach and Pass-a-Grille are further south and quieter; downtown St. Petersburg is inland and across the peninsula. Tampa, and everything in it, is back over the causeway — worth knowing if your trip includes a night in the city.

Departure morning from a barrier island means the island crossing, the peninsula, and then the causeway back over the bay — and it is a route where you want the vehicle to be at the hotel at an agreed time rather than summoned.
