Destinations divide into three: downtown Sarasota and its bayfront, the barrier islands of Lido and Longboat Key reached over the causeways, and the University Parkway corridor to the north. Baggage Claim, Level 1 of the Main Terminal
TPA is one Main Terminal connected to four satellite airsides by shuttle. You ride your airside’s shuttle back, come down to Baggage Claim on Level 1, and your chauffeur is there with a sign showing your name.

Baggage claim at TPA is split Red and Blue by carrier, with ground transportation tied to the same split. Your confirmation tells your chauffeur which side to meet you on, so there is no phone call and no walking the length of the hall.

We recommend the GMC Yukon SUV for this route as a matter of course. It is a long drive, the luggage is usually holiday luggage rather than overnight luggage, and the extra space matters more over an hour than it does over ten minutes. A Mercedes sedan is comfortable for two travelling light; beyond that, take the SUV.

Downtown Sarasota and the bayfront
Main Street and the bayfront marina district form a compact, walkable centre with the city’s restaurants and its arts institutions around them. It is smaller and quieter than either Tampa or St. Petersburg, which is largely the point of it.
St. Armands, Lido and Longboat Key
St. Armands Circle is the shopping and dining circle out on St. Armands Key, with Lido Beach just beyond it and Longboat Key stretching north as a long barrier island of resorts and private residences. All of them are over the causeways from the city.
Siesta Key and the southern beaches
Siesta Key, south of the city, has the quartz-sand beach the region is known for. It is a separate causeway crossing again, and in season it is the slowest approach in Sarasota County — worth building into the arrival rather than discovering.

The return needs more margin than a Tampa-area departure, because the length of the run means an incident on the Skyway or the causeways has somewhere to accumulate.
