Chauffeured Itinerary · Tampa Bay
A Day in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg is the other half of Tampa Bay, and the half people underestimate: a genuinely walkable downtown, a museum district, and a waterfront park system that runs for miles.
Who this itinerary suits.
Visitors based in Tampa with a free day, couples who would rather look at art than lie on sand, and anyone who wants a city day that is walkable at the destination but a bridge away from where they are staying.
Recommended duration: 6 to 8 hours
Where we start.
Your Tampa hotel
Mid-morning pickup works best — the galleries and the waterfront are both better before the afternoon heat.
Tampa International Airport (TPA)
TPA sits on the western edge of Tampa, which makes it the closest major airport to St. Petersburg. This works well as an arrival-day itinerary.
A Clearwater or beach hotel
St. Petersburg is an easy inland counterweight to a beach-heavy trip.
The stops, in order.
Times below are how long to give each stop — a planning recommendation, not an opening hour. Check hours, tickets and admission on each venue’s own site before you go.
The Central Arts District
Central Avenue, Downtown St. Petersburg / Two to three hours
Start with the museums and the galleries clustered around downtown and Central Avenue. Buy tickets in advance where you can, and check each museum’s own hours on the day — they vary by institution and by season.
Beach Drive and the waterfront parks
Downtown St. Petersburg / About 90 minutes
Lunch on Beach Drive and a walk through the waterfront park system, which is the thing St. Petersburg does better than anywhere else on the bay. This is the stretch that changes people’s minds about the city.
The St. Pete Pier
Downtown waterfront / One to two hours
The rebuilt pier district — open space, a rooftop, places to eat, and views back across the bay towards Tampa. Good with children and good without them.
Dinner downtown, or a drink before the bridge
Central Avenue and the EDGE District / The evening, if you stay for it
Downtown St. Petersburg has a real evening — Italian rooms on Central, cocktail bars, a brewery scene in the EDGE District. Staying for dinner is what turns this from an afternoon into a day.
What to know about the driving.
- Eight hours covers a museum morning, a waterfront afternoon and dinner. Six is a solid museums-and-Pier day without the evening.
- The crossing between Tampa and St. Petersburg is over the bay, and the bridges are the variable — not the mileage. We build the day around that rather than pretending it is not there.
- Once you are downtown, St. Petersburg is walkable. Most of this itinerary is on foot, with the vehicle repositioning between districts rather than shadowing you block by block.
- Museum hours and ticketing differ by institution and change seasonally. Check each one on the day; we deliberately do not publish them.
- Sarasota and St. Armands Circle are a further run south if you want to extend the day rather than turn back.
Why a chauffeur
What the driver actually changes.
Downtown parking never comes up
The busiest blocks on Central and Beach Drive are the ones you want to be dropped on, and the ones where a visitor loses the most time to a garage.
The bay crossing is somebody else’s job
Two bridges, unfamiliar approaches, and a tourist reading signage at speed. Not the way to start the day.
The vehicle moves with the plan
Arts district in the morning, Pier in the afternoon, dinner downtown — the chauffeur repositions between them while you walk.
Dinner becomes an option again
A day trip that ends with a drink is only possible if nobody has to drive back over the bay afterwards.
