St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach are often lumped together as "Tampa Bay beaches," but they offer meaningfully different experiences. Understanding those differences helps you choose the right base for your trip.
Geography
- Clearwater Beach: Northern Pinellas County, 30 miles west of Tampa
- St. Pete Beach: Southern Pinellas County, 25 miles southwest of Tampa
- The two beaches are about 15-20 miles apart on the barrier island chain
The Sand & Water
Advantage: Clearwater Beach (slightly)
Both beaches have beautiful white sand and warm Gulf water. Clearwater Beach's sand is marginally wider and more consistently maintained. Both rate among the best beaches in the US — neither will disappoint.
Resort Hotels
Advantage: Clearwater Beach
Clearwater Beach has a better luxury hotel selection — Sandpearl, Opal Sands, and Hyatt Regency Clearwater all offer full resort amenities directly on the beach. St. Pete Beach's most distinctive property is the Don CeSar, with the moderate-range Gulf Blvd strip filling out the rest.
Activities & Entertainment
Advantage: Clearwater Beach (more organized activity)
Clearwater Beach has the Pier 60 sunset celebration, dolphin cruises, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, parasailing, and a comprehensive water sports infrastructure. St. Pete Beach is more relaxed with fewer organized activities.
Atmosphere
Advantage: St. Pete Beach (quieter, more local)
St. Pete Beach, particularly the Pass-a-Grille and Gulf Blvd areas, has a more relaxed, less resort-driven atmosphere. Clearwater Beach's Pier 60 area is excellent but leans commercial. For couples seeking quiet romance, St. Pete Beach wins.
