  3. /Dog-Friendly Tampa Bay: Complete Guide for Traveling with Pets

Tampa Bay is surprisingly dog-friendly for a major Florida destination — several dog-friendly beaches, outdoor dining patios, and parks make it an excellent destination for dog-owning travelers.

Florida is generally one of America's more dog-friendly states — excellent weather allows outdoor dining year-round, and the culture of outdoor activity creates natural spaces where dogs are welcomed. Tampa Bay specifically has several excellent dog-friendly destinations.

Dog-Friendly Beaches

Fort De Soto Dog Beach

One of Florida's finest dog beaches — a designated off-leash dog beach area at Fort De Soto Park with easy Gulf water access, shade structures, and the unusual combination of beautiful beach + dog freedom that's rare in Florida.

Honeymoon Island State Park (Dog Beach)

Honeymoon Island has a designated dog beach on the pet-friendly North Beach section. Leashed dogs are allowed on this portion of the beach.

Ben T. Davis Beach (Tampa)

A dog-friendly beach area on the Courtney Campbell Causeway — convenient for Tampa residents, though not the most beautiful beach in the region.

Dog-Friendly Parks

  • Al Lopez Park (Tampa) — Large park with designated off-leash area
  • Rowlett Park (Tampa) — Natural park along Hillsborough River
  • Philippe Park (Safety Harbor) — Waterfront park, leashed dogs welcome
  • Most Florida state parks: Leashed dogs allowed on designated trails and some beach areas

Dog-Friendly Hotels

Most major hotel brands accommodate pets with fees ($25-75/night typically):

  • Westin properties (Westin Tampa Waterside: pet-friendly)
  • Kimpton Hotels (pet-friendly as brand standard)
  • Many independent and boutique properties in St. Pete

Dog-Friendly Dining

Florida's year-round outdoor dining culture means most restaurants with patio seating welcome leashed dogs:

  • Armature Works outdoor areas
  • Most outdoor bars and patios throughout the region
  • Pass-a-Grille Village area restaurants

Traveling with Your Dog: Transportation

We welcome well-behaved dogs in our vehicles. Please let us know at the time of booking that you'll be traveling with a dog — we'll ensure appropriate vehicle preparation.

  • Dogs must be contained (crate or restrained) for the safety of all
  • A cleaning fee of $50 may apply for excessive shedding or accidents

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dogs allowed on Clearwater Beach?
