Clearwater Beach is more than just white sand and warm water — though those alone justify the trip. The island has built an impressive portfolio of family activities that make it a full-destination vacation rather than just a beach day. Here's what to do beyond sunbathing.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium
The Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) is one of Florida's most beloved attractions — a genuine working marine rehabilitation facility that became world-famous as the home of Winter the dolphin (subject of the "Dolphin Tale" films). The aquarium houses dolphins, sea turtles, river otters, sharks, stingrays, and other marine life in realistic naturalistic habitats.

Pier 60 & Sunset
Pier 60 is the social center of Clearwater Beach — a 1,000-foot fishing pier that hosts the nightly sunset celebration (typically 2 hours before sunset to 2 hours after) with street performers, artisans, and the remarkable Gulf sunset backdrop. Free to attend.
Dolphin Tours & Sunset Cruises
Several operators from the Clearwater Beach Marina run dolphin-watching cruises, sunset cruises, and adventure boat tours. Captain Memo's Pirate Cruise and Sea Screamer are favorites with families.
Parasailing
Multiple parasailing operators at Clearwater Beach offer tandem and single flights over the Gulf, typically reaching 400-800 feet with spectacular views of the beach and barrier island chain. Weight and weather requirements apply.
Kayak & Paddleboard Rentals
Rentals available at multiple beach locations. The Intracoastal Waterway behind the island offers calmer water for beginners. Caladesi Island kayak trail (accessible by ferry or paddleboard) is outstanding for nature.
Shell Key Sanctuary
A pristine undeveloped island just offshore accessible by kayak or private boat, Shell Key Sanctuary offers an escape from the resort strip — excellent shelling, bird watching, and clear shallow Gulf water.
Sand Castle Building
Clearwater Beach hosts professional sand castle competitions and some of the best sand (due to its fine texture) for building. Buckets, tools, and lessons are available from beach vendors.
