Fort De Soto Park is one of Florida's most extraordinary parks — five connected barrier islands, multiple pristine beaches, excellent snorkeling, and a historic Spanish-American War fort.

Fort De Soto Park is Tampa Bay's most extraordinary natural destination — a 1,136-acre park on five connected barrier islands at the mouth of Tampa Bay, consistently voted one of America's best parks and best campgrounds. It offers what many consider the most beautiful and natural beach in the entire Tampa Bay area.

The Beaches

North Beach

Fort De Soto's main swim beach — wide, white sand, gentle Gulf water, picnic areas and concessions. One of the finest beaches in Pinellas County.

East Beach

On the Tampa Bay side (not Gulf), East Beach has calmer, shallower water — excellent for kayaking, paddleboarding, and families with very young children.

Snorkeling Shoal

Fort De Soto has one of the best snorkeling spots in the Tampa Bay area — an artificial reef and seagrass area near the park entrance where sea turtles, rays, and diverse fish are commonly seen.

Fort De Soto (The Actual Fort)

Built in 1898 during the Spanish-American War and never fired in combat, the fort's massive concrete batteries and preserved gun emplacements are open for self-guided exploration. An excellent example of coastal fortification from the era.

Bird Migration

Fort De Soto is one of the top birding spots in the southeastern United States. The park sits on a key migratory flyway, and during spring and fall migrations (April-May and September-October), thousands of neotropical birds stop to rest and feed. The pass-through concentration can be extraordinary.

Kayaking & Paddleboarding

The park's back bays and mangrove shoreline offer excellent kayak exploration. Rentals are available seasonally at the park's concession stand. The kayak trail through the mangroves is particularly beautiful.

Getting to Fort De Soto Park

  • From TPA Airport: 30-35 miles, 40-50 minutes, from $58
  • From St. Petersburg Downtown: 20-25 miles, 30-40 minutes, from $48
  • From Clearwater Beach: 20-25 miles, 30-40 minutes, from $50

Note: The park entrance is at the end of a long barrier island causeway. There's no parking alternative — private transfer eliminates the wait for limited parking.
