Florida has one of the most diverse and accessible wildlife concentrations of any state in the US. The Tampa Bay region is exceptional — warm Gulf waters support manatees and dolphins year-round, the coastal wetlands are extraordinary for birdwatching, and freshwater systems harbor alligators and a remarkable diversity of species. Here's how to find them.
Dolphins
Bottlenose dolphins are year-round residents of Tampa Bay and the adjacent Gulf. They're remarkably approachable:
- Clearwater Beach dolphin cruises: 90-minute tours with near-guaranteed sightings
- Fort De Soto Park: Dolphins frequently visible from North Beach
- Intracoastal Waterway: Visible from bridge crossings throughout Pinellas County
- Florida Aquarium eco-cruise: Wild dolphin watching from Tampa Bay
Manatees
- Apollo Beach TECO Center: Free, November-April, 50-100+ manatees visible
- Crystal River: 90 min north; swim-with-manatees tours, November-March
- Homosassa Springs State Park: Year-round resident manatees
Sea Turtles
Three sea turtle species nest on Gulf beaches — loggerhead (most common), green, and leatherhead. Nesting season: May-October. Hatching: July-November.
- Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach have active nest monitoring programs
- Sea turtle hatchling releases are sometimes open to the public through the Clearwater Marine Aquarium
Alligators
American alligators inhabit virtually every freshwater lake, river, pond, and wetland in Florida:
- Myakka River State Park — Outstanding viewing from Upper Myakka Lake boardwalk
- Circle B Bar Reserve (Lakeland) — Extraordinary concentration, easy walking trail
- Lettuce Lake Park (Tampa) — Urban gator habitat, boardwalk viewing
Birds
Florida's birdwatching is world-class:
- Fort De Soto Park — Top migration hotspot in the Southeast
- Honeymoon Island — Osprey rookeries, shorebirds
- Ding Darling Refuge (Sanibel) — Roseate spoonbills, wood storks, herons in abundance
- Myakka River — Sandhill cranes, spoonbills, wood storks, sandpipers
