Florida's extraordinary wild landscapes extend well beyond the managed beaches — the Everglades, the Myakka River prairie, and the backcountry of the Ten Thousand Islands represent some of the most remarkable wilderness in North America, and much of it is accessible from Tampa Bay. Here's your guide to experiencing it.
Myakka River State Park (Nearest Option)
Distance from Tampa: 55-60 miles, 60-70 minutes
Myakka is the most accessible "wild Florida" experience from Tampa Bay — 37,000 acres of wetland, pine flatwoods, and dry prairie with one of the highest alligator concentrations of any accessible Florida park.
- Airboat tours: Available seasonally from the park's Upper Myakka Lake
- Tram tours: Narrated tours through the savanna/wetland areas
- Canopy walkway: Elevated walkway through the tree canopy, remarkable views
- Kayaking: Self-guided on the river and lake
- Best for: Alligators, birds (including rare sandhill cranes and roseate spoonbills)
Everglades City (True Everglades)
Distance from Tampa: 180-190 miles, 2.5-3 hours
Everglades City at the northwestern edge of Everglades National Park offers the most accessible true Everglades experience from the west coast:
- Everglades National Park boat tours: Authorized tours through the 10,000 Islands
- Airboat tours: Multiple operators in the area
- Kayak/canoe camping: The 99-mile Wilderness Waterway through the park
Naples/Marco Island Backcountry
Distance from Tampa: 2.5-3 hours
The Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge accessible from Naples and Marco Island offers a different but equally extraordinary ecosystem — mangrove forests, tidal lagoons, and extraordinary wildlife without the crowds of the park itself.
Big Cypress National Preserve
Along I-75 (Alligator Alley) between Fort Myers and Miami — Big Cypress is a vast subtropical wilderness with unique cypress swamp ecosystems. The Oasis Visitor Center on I-75 has reliable alligator viewing and is worth a 30-minute stop during any Tampa-Miami drive.
What to Expect on an Airboat Tour
- Duration: 45-90 minutes typically
- Noise: Very loud — ear protection provided by operators
- Wildlife: Alligators almost guaranteed; birds abundant; otters, turtles common
- Best time: Morning for wildlife activity; avoid midday heat in summer
